Earliest meeting: 1791 Final meeting: 1791 The 175 acre Hertfordshire Park at Aldenham, close to Elstree, was the setting for a race meeting which took place in 1791. Today it is a Country Park with woodland, parkland and a range of activities, but back in the late 1700s the nearby Reservoir was excavated by French Prisoners of War. The Park contained Common land on which the meeting was staged. The ‘History of Hertfordshire’ recorded that one of the events was run in heats and the overall winner was Smuggler, owned by Mr Brooks from St Albans. It is amazing to think that the horse had to run in six heats before being declared the winner.
